- Sue stands below the entrance of the Acropolis. The first entrance is called "The Beule Gate" and was built in the 5th century B.C. Of course before that is your modern day ticket booths.
- Sue is actually standing closer to #9 however she is looking down at #2. This is the Theater of Herodes Atticus, also known as the Odeion of Herodes Atticus, originally built in AD 161. It was restored in 1955 and is used today for outdoor concerts. Yani fan's may remember him performing here. However, I do not.
- Sue and Joe stand before "The Proylaia" built in 437-432 B.C. to form a new entrance to the Acropolis. You can see steepness and the tops of the pilars in this picture of Sue.
- This number points to the "Porch of the Caryatids". Sue is standing in front of them. These statues of women were used in place of columns on the south porch of the Erchthion. Four originals remain on the Acropolis and our tour guide told us the British have the other originals in a London museum. Our tour guide really hated the Brits and the Turks because of all the artifacts they took over the years when they occupied Greece.
- The number 5 marks the spot where Sue and Joe stand in this picture. In a second picture of this area Sue and our tour guide help you gage the actual enormity of the Parthenon in the background. The Parthenon is the main temple on the Acropolis dedicated to the worship of the goddess Athena.
- The number 6 marks the spot where Sue stands on a wall in this picture. Next to her you can see the rear of the Parthenon. Get down from there Sue before you hurt yourself ! ! !
- Number 7 points to the Acropolis museum, a modern building that houses the majority of the Acropolis artifacts like this one. Inside you may take pictures as long as they don't include people in them. It is considered to be rude. We couldn't figure out why.
- Sue and our tour guide look down on the "Theater of Dionysos". This was built in 342-326 B.C. by Lykourgos.
- The 9 on the map above is exactly where Joe and Sue are standing for this picture taken by our tour guide. He was the best guide of the trip for lots of reasons. Mostly because we didn't have to share him with anyone else. After spending an hour and a half with us, he took this picture, gave us some marital advice, gave Sue a big sloppy kiss and a hug, and wished us goodbye.
